Mountain apartment is called a land area located on crown land above the cultivation boundary. This limit was established in 1867 with the aim of securing the Sami right of use of reindeer grazing land. It is thus more about an administrative than a natural dividing line.

Obviously, it was possible to cultivate the land above this limit to some extent. Both illegal and legal establishments took place. In 1915, all settlements above the cultivation border were legalized and brought together under the name "mountain apartment".
